The much talk about NEP wasn't the concern of the non-Malays; they don't care a damn if you give anything or everything to Malays. What they are concerned is, just leave them alone to do their things and cari makan. Non-Malays have accepted that they need to fend for themselves and had not and will not depend on the govt for aids and handouts. The only aspects that they will defend and will want the govt to be fair is the provision of education up to university level and health-care. Many non-Malays are not that rich and can't afford to sent their children to overseas Uni. At such, the need places in public U if they had the necessary results to justify a place. It's not about meritocracy or to compete with Malays; it's about the responsibility of the govt to allocate them places if they fulfilled the criterias. Let's say, the public U can accomodate all Malays and only those non-Malays who qualified say, a minimum of 2.6CGPA, they will be happy. It must be remembered that their expectation is fair as they had voted in BN as the govt on this expectation. None of them cried for APs, and projects that are reserved for Bumis and also land for Malays. None cried for posts in GLCs, or sr. civil servant post such as D-Gs. They don't care as long as they survived; they are subdued type of people, happy to earn a living based on their sweat and tears, and happy to let others rule.

However, time and again, UMNO had used their own convention to instigate them for the fact that the govt's policies had not benefited the majority of Malay commoners except the cronies. In order to side-track the Malay commoners, they had to strategize by creating a common enemy, and unfortunately, they can't blame the British anymore as they had left. They can't blame the Indians as most of them are marginalised. They had only one community to pick on - that's the Chinese as tho' they had been marginalised, yet quite many are able to prosper by virtue of their hardwork and synergies. There aren't any other which can be made an enemy for the Malay poors; the Chinese are just "unfortunate' to be the sacrificial lamb and their continued silence over the decades allowed the UMNO leaders to take advantage of them for the fact that they will be used as the sacrifical lamb and then after the GA, the top leaders will then give some assurances to cool them off. That happens all the time. Some how, the MCA and Gerakan leaders were prepared to live on the hope of a better tomorrow and at the same time, they join in the crony game and dig deep to enrich themselves such that they are financially capable to take their families overseas if they need to.

That's the fact which will remain for a long time to come, till a day... we don't know when, but that day has to come... the clash of civilisation. We can only pray that good sense and mutual trust will prevail to knit the social fabric and ensure peace and harmony for all.

For that, the principles of natural law and common goods must avail. Jurisprudence and the rule of law is the answer.Maverick SMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02871611453372513136noreply@blogger.com
