Former Umno leaders set up body to champion Malay interests

The Organisation of Former Umno Elected Representatives was set up to champion the interests of Malays in the economic, education, religious and language fields in line with the party’s struggle, its president Tan Sri Adam Kadir said today.

He said the organisation, which was registered on Dec 14 last year, would safeguard the fundamental rights of the Malays as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and intensify efforts to unite the Malays.

Adam said that at the inaugural general meeting, Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin was elected vice-president I and Thamrin Tun Ghafar, vice-president II.

“Six people were elected to the supreme assembly. They are Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, Tan Sri Sabaruddin Chik, Datuk Mokhtar Hashim, Datuk Seri Dr Suleiman Mohamed, Aziz Yassin and Datuk Dr Afiffudin Omar,” he said when contacted by Bernama here.

Adam said the organisation provided for ordinary and associate memberships.

“The ordinary members comprise former members of parliament, former senators and former state assemblymen from Umno. The associate membership will be offered to individuals such as Malay intellectuals and leaders,” he said.

Adam said the next meeting of the supreme assembly will see the appointment a secretary-general and discuss several issues related to the Malay community. — Bernama
