Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S Subramaniam informed that at least 4,749 workers, mostly from the electronics sector, will be retrenched by 137 employers in the next three months which is beyond the Government’s control, which also includes some 1,500 Western Digital workers in Kuching.After a dialogue with the Malaysian Training Providers Berhad this afternoon, Datuk Dr Subramaniam assured workers that his Ministry will ensure compensation will be made available as provided for under the Employment (Termination And Lay-off Benefits) Regulations.
According to the Regulation, workers who have been with a company for two years or less, the compensation would be 10 days of salary per year of work while those between two and five years, it would be 15 days of salary per year and for those above five years, 20 days.
Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Subramaniam informed the government would look into getting alternative employment for the workers and a dialogue with those affected would be done soon.
This clearly indicates that the global recession is already affecting Malaysia but this Barisan Nasional federal government does not want to admit.
