The Tamil daily Makkal Osai has been rejected of their publishing licence today since they have been extensively covering the stories of the activities of the Opposition parties and HINDRAF. Initial reports indicate that they have received a suspension notice of 1 week after the Cabinet Meeting held today.
According to its General Manager, S M Periasamy, since October 15,2007, the day its permit expired, the daily had continued printing with the understanding that the government was in the process of considering its application for renewal and it finally received the answer from the Ministry today that it was rejected.
Its owner, former Deputy Minister and former MIC Deputy President Datuk S Subramaniam had been reported to have met today with Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar to appeal against this decision.
It is learned that Makkal Osai employs about 100 workers and has a circulation of about 52,000 copies daily.
