Kedah MCA luncheon with Ka Ting still on

Despite poor response, party presidential candidate, Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, will proceed to have a luncheon today with the Kedah MCA as planned.

An aide to the former party president confirmed with The Malaysian Insider last night that the luncheon, set for 12.30pm in Sungai Petani, had not been cancelled as claimed by Kedah MCA deputy chairman, Datuk Chong Itt Chew.

“The luncheon in Kedah is still on,” the aide said in an SMS.

Chong, an ally of Ka Ting’s contender for Sunday’s poll, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, had earlier told The Malaysian Insider that the luncheon had been cancelled due to poor response from the Kedah delegates.

Chong had said that 14 of the 15 state divisions had decided not to attend the luncheon, in what appears to be a direct snub to the veteran leader.

He had also claimed the rejection proved that the majority of the state’s 173 central delegates did not support Ka Ting.

When contacted last night to confirm if the luncheon was on, Chong said: “Well, it’s ok if they want to proceed with the function.”

He maintained that Ka Ting did not have the support of the Kedah MCA, and alleged that the latter had to bring in delegates from Bukit Mertajam and Butterworth.

“It does not matter if he wants to proceed with the luncheon. The fact remains that none of the divisions (in Kedah) supports him (Ka Ting).
