Tee Keat: MCA fresh polls in 30 days

MCA president Ong Tee Keat has confirmed that fresh polls for the central committee will be held within 30 days following the resignation of two-thirds of its members.

"My supporters and I had expected this long-anticipated development," said Ong, whose refusal to resign after losing a no-confidence vote during the October 2009 extraordinary general meeting (EGM) sparked calls for fresh polls.

"Now that a fresh party election has been set in motion, it is time for us to ensure that the election is conducted in a fair and proper manner and with regard to due process," Ong said in a post on his blog.

Earlier today, a total of 21 central committee members aligned to deputy president Dr Chua Soi Lek and Liow Tiong Lai resigned from their posts prompting a dissolution of the central committee.

Ong however did not state whether the central committee meeting tomorrow would proceed as scheduled.

Additionally, Ong said he was the first to propose fresh polls back in Oct 15, 2009 in the aftermath of the EGM five days earlier.

"This was met with strong resistance from various quarters," he said.

At the time, Liow was temporarily appointed deputy president by the central committee and was against fresh polls.

However, his faction began to campaign for fresh polls after Chua was reinstated as the deputy president after the Registrar of Societies interpreted the EGM results in his favour.
