Tengku Faris removed as Kelantan Regent

Tengku  Muhammad Faris Petra was removed from his position as the Regent of Kelantan today.
Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Daud, the newly-appointed private secretary to the Sultan of Kelantan, commented that this would complicate the crisis plaguing Istana Kelantan.

Wan Hashim, whose appointment took place last week, explained that the decision to remove Tengku Faris was made due to the former’s refusal to proceed with the Sultan’s 60th birthday celebration on March 30.

“Following his defiance to not proceed with the investiture ceremony as well as the celebration of the Sultan’s 60th birthday, and due to his failure in undertaking his responsibilities to protect His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Kelantan has decided to remove Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra as the Regent of Kelantan,” Wan Hashim announced at a press conference in Istana Mahkota, Kubang Kerian.

The Sultan’s decision was announced a day after Tengku Muhammad Faris made the announcement that the Sultan was too ill to carry out the duties of the Sultan according to the Kelantan State Constitution.

The Regent said that, under Clause (1) (b), Article 22A of the State Constitution, he had been chosen as the Regent on May 24, 2009 to carry out the functions of the Ruler of the state until Sultan Ismail Petra recovered from his illness.

In his speech which was read out by the Comptroller of the Kelantan Royal Palace, Datuk Abdul Halim Hamad, at a media conference at Istana Balai Besar,Tengku Faris stressed that any press statement that is not authenticated by the panel of specialist doctors appointed to carry out a medical examination on the Sultan will be deemed as inaccurate
