Cabinet to decide on new power tariff tomorrow

The cabinet will decide tomorrow on the new electricity tariff, says Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Peter Chin Fah Kui.

He said his ministry had submitted a proposal paper on power rate review to the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister's Department.

"If the cabinet approves, there will be some increase, it can't be a reduction," he told reporters at the Tenaga Nasional Bhd Chinese New Year gathering in Kuala Lumpur.

On the percentage of increase, Chin said: "I can't tell you because tomorrow the cabinet may decide otherwise".

He also said the water levels at all dams and catchment areas nationwide, except for the Sembrong Timur water treatment plant in Kluang, Johor, are reported to be in good condition.

Chin said the treatment plant in Kluang was in critical condition after the water level of Sungai Sembrong, which supplied the water, dropped.

The ministry was monitoring the situation at all the dams and catchment areas closely following the current dry spell which gave rise to concerns about dropping water levels, he said.

If the levels reached a dangerous stage water conservation would be carried out, he added.
