Stay away from beaches, Sabahans warned

Coastal residents in southern Sabah have been advised to stay away from the beaches as there are likely to be rough sea conditions and rising sea level, starting from noon and lasting until 6pm today.

The Meteorological Department warning is due to the huge magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck central Chile yesterday, triggering tsunami waves that spread across the Pacific ocean, affecting places as far away as Mexico, Tahiti, Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa Islands and New Zealand. – Bernama
