Home Ministry to reward top performing police stations

The Home Ministry has allocated a cash reward amount to RM1 million to be given to the top 10 performing police stations in the country.

Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today the reward was an incentive to the force to work harder in combating crime.

“We will reward everyone involved — from the officer in charge of the station to all the other personnel in the station,” he said after attending a crime briefing at the Petaling Jaya City Council in Kota Damansara here today.

Hishammuddin said all 754 police stations in the country would be involved in a competition to win the cash reward.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to launch the competition, called the “police station league table”, in about two weeks.

“The reward will go to the top 10 performing stations. For the others, they will be given a chance to improve themselves,” said Hishammuddin.

He said the contest was one of the ministry’s 52 initiatives to solve the country’s security problems.

He noted that the ministry’s main focus was on the “omnipresence” of the police despite the shortage of personnel.

“But I believe that so far we have done well and are on track. There was a 3.7 per cent reduction in the index crime rate from the second quarter to the fourth quarter of last year and a 7.6 per cent reduction in street crimes in the same period,” he said.

He said this was due to the help of other security forces and volunteers like Rela, the Rukun Tetangga, the auxiliary police and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department.

In his speech earlier, Hishammuddin said the police to civilian ratio was at one policeman for every 800 civilians.

“The international standard is one policeman to every 250 civilians,” he said.

He added that the last mass recruitment drive for policemen was in 1999. The next drive would be under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

He also said the ministry needed to come up with for more ideas to ensure that the presence of security personnel was felt.
