Kit Siang: Anwar Can Continue as Opposition Leader

Former opposition chief and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said today Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can remain as the opposition leader even if the number of Members of Parliament (MP) from his Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is less than that of the DAP.

"As far as the DAP is concerned, Anwar continues as parliamentary opposition leader even if PKR MPs number less than the DAP’s 28 MPs," he said in his blog and Twitter.

Lim said he was asked to comment by the media on a tweet by Anwar that he had no problem if Lim wanted to take over from him as the parliamentary opposition leader.

"All keen followers of the Malaysian political scene saw what was happening in PKR as a long-needed self-cleansing process which, however painful and agonising, was necessary to restore public confidence in the credibility and viability of PKR and Pakatan Rakyat," he said.

The issue of Anwar's post cropped up after the number of PKR MPs was reduced to 29 after Bayan Baru MP Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim (Bayan Baru) and MP Tan Tee Beng (Nibong Tebal) quit the party and became independent MPs.

This leaves the Dewan Rakyat with 138 Barisan Nasional MPs, PKR 29, DAP 28, PAS 23 and four independence MPs.

On whether the DAP would rally behind Anwar who is facing his second sodomy trial, Lim said the question did not arise.

"My response was that the question of the DAP rallying behind Anwar does not arise as we are solidly in support of his leadership in Pakatan Rakyat, as parliamentary opposition leader and as prime minister-designate in the Pakatan Rakyat plan to wrest power from Umno and Barisan Nasional in the next general election," he said.
