Selangor Looking at Alternative Ways to Hold Local Elections

The Selangor government will look at alternative ways of holding local elections, following the the Election Commission (EC) announcing that it is not empowered to hold such elections.

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (pic) said the state government was officially informed by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof yesterday that the EC and the state government were not empowered to hold local council elections.
"We are of the belief that in a mature democracy, it would be good to give the people many avenues to choose their representatives," he said in a statement here today.
On March 11, Abdul Khalid had written to the EC about holding local council elections in Selangor.
