Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this when asked to comment on former MCA president Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting's decision to contest in the party elections on March 28, which is feared by some quarters to affect BN's performance in the next general election.
"Success in the general election is not dependent on one factor. We have to consider various factors that can contribute to the outcome," he told reporters after receiving a courtesy call from the new All England singles badminton champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei at his residence in Jalan Duta in Kuala Lumpur today.
Ong announced today that he would contest the MCA president post, so had the incumbent Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
MCA members to decide
"We cannot say that the leadership of Ong Tee Keat or Ong Ka Ting to be the determining factor (in the general election), for we have to also consider other factors," Najib said.
The prime minister said he would leave it to the MCA members to ensure that the party crisis would be resolved soon through new elections.
"I leave it to the members to decide what is good for the party.
"What is important is for the MCA internal crisis to end as soon as possible and for the new leaders to be accepted, not just by the party members but by the Chinese community as well," he said.
