HAS UMNO/BN FLOUT THE ELECTIONS LAW WITH THE RM218 MILLION CAMPAIGN MATERIALS DEBT?

Malaysiakini reported today that under Section 19 of the Election Offences Act 1954, a candidate cannot spend more than RM200,000 to contest a parliamentary seat and RM100,000 to contest a state seat and taking into account these figures it seems that Barisan Nasional (BN) had during the 2004 elections far exceeded the limits allowed under election laws, DAP Secretary-General and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said in statement.

"With 219 parliamentary seats and 505 state seats contested in the 2004 general elections, this means that a party like BN that contested all seats cannot spend more than RM94.3 million or else BN's victories are illegal," said Lim Guan Eng.

Under Section 27 of the Elections Offences Act 1954, spending above permitted limits is illegal and candidates who break the rules can be fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court, be disqualified from holding office as wakil rakyat (Member of Parliament/State Assemblyman) and even have his or her voting rights removed.

That means UMNO or BN elected representatives, most of them are disqualified from contesting in the March 2008 general elections and it seems that with this situation BN has lost its control of Parliament or State Assembly or to govern the government.

Time for the Election Commission to nullify the BN candidates and give those seats to the highest securing remaining candidate during the March 2008 general elections.

The END OF Barisan Nasional REGIME is about to materialise.

Rule of law - so eloquently put by Foreign Minister Rais and others in the Cabinet. Yes, one set for UMNO/BN and another set for peasants.
