Pathihyah is first woman to head local council

Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) secretary Patahiyah Ismail has been appointed as the president of the council.

Her appointment is effective March 1.

Announcing the appointment here today, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Patahiyah, who was currently the council's acting president, would become the first woman in the country to head a local authority.

"After Tan Cheng Chui retired as MPPP president, Patahiyah was appointed president in an acting capacity and she performed the job very well," Lim told reporters here today.

Tan, 54, had opted for early retirement on health grounds.

Patahiyah joined MMPP as an architect in 1985.
