The MCA today urged the Terengganu government to extend immediate assistance for the restoration of the 200-year-old Ho Ann Kiong temple here, which was ravaged in a fire on Feb 22.

MCA Religious Bureau chairman Datuk Seri Tan Chai Ho said Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said should take a leaf from the federal government’s initiative in donating RM500,000 towards the reconstruction of the Metro Tabernacle church in Kuala Lumpur, which suffered extensive damage in its front portion after coming under an arson attack.

“MCA is of the view that the Terengganu government should accord the same type of generosity and compassion towards a temple which is now left unusable because of the blaze,” he said in a statement, here.

He said this in response to Ahmad’s statement on Monday as reported by The Star newspaper that the state government would not be making any monetary contribution towards the restoration of the Ho Ann Kiong Temple because it had received donations from businessman.

Tan, who is a MCA Central Committee CC) member, said it was not a wise move for a state government to ignore the welfare of houses of worship.

“This will debunk the sprit of 1Malaysia which calls for unity in diversity,” he added. — Bernama
