MCA CC to pick coordinator for party polls

MCA secretary-general Wong Foon Meng has confirmed that the central committee would meet at 1pm today to finalise decisions regarding holding fresh party polls.

NONESpeaking to reporters before the meeting, Wong (left) said the central committee will elect among themselves a coordinator for the polls.

The committee will also discuss the fate of the annual general meeting scheduled for this Sunday.

According to Wong, the party must hold elections for the central committee within 30 days, beginning yesterday, which was the day he received resignation letters from 21 central committee members.

Under the MCA constitution, new party polls must be held within 30 days following the stunning resignations yesterday and the party AGM could be held at the same time.

The resignations of two-thirds of the powerful central committee have forced the embattled party to call for fresh leadership elections.

Meanwhile, the MCA Youth and Women's wing has resolved to postpone its AGM scheduled for tomorrow following the 21 resignations.

Both wings will also be holding a jointly hosted dinner for delegates tonight, who have already arrived in anticipation for the AGM tomorrow.

The joint dinner has not be cancelled.

Leaders of the two wings have been at loggerheads with party president Ong Tee Keat, who has been trying to delay the party polls until later this year.
