Sultan can pardon Kartika without appeal says prince

The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, said today that under the state’s syariah law, the Sultan of Pahang can lighten the caning sentence of part time model Kartika Sari Dewi or even pardon her altogether even if she does not appeal.

The prince told reporters this after meeting Kartika for half an hour this morning at the Pahang Islamic Religious Council office in Pekan, Pahang.

Tengku Abdullah said that the Sultan’s prerogative to do so comes under Section 133 of the Pahang Syariah Criminal Procedure Enactment 2002.

He added that he would convey the contents of this morning’s meeting to the Sultan.

Kartika, in her audience with the prince this morning, had expressed her desire to be caned without delay according to her father-in-law, Amlir Ayat.

“Kartika is firm that she wants the caning sentence to be carried out,” Amlir told The Malaysian Insider over the telephone from Pekan, Pahang.

Kartika was sentenced to six strokes of the cane and fined RM5,000 by the Syariah court last July after she was found guilty of drinking beer.

Her sentence has yet to be carried out after it was postponed. The caning sentence has attracted international attention.
