Sultan to study Kartika's case

The Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah said he would have to seek legal advice on the Islamic caning of former part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Sukarno before making a decision.

Sultan Ahmad Shah said he had not receive any appeal against the sentence from Kartika Sari Dewi, 33.

"I have to study the case and seek legal advice before making a decision," Sultan Ahmad Shah told reporters after opening the new Kuala Krau bridge here today.

Last July 20, Kartika Sari Dewi was fined RM5,000 and ordered to be given six strokes of the rotan by the Kuantan Syariah High Court after she pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in public.

She paid the fine but refused to appeal against the caning sentence, which was later postponed several times.

Kartika Sari Dewi had an audience with Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Islamic Complex, Pekan on March 3.

Tengku Abdullah said he had briefed Sultan Ahmad Shah on the meeting, added that the Sultan had the power to pardon Kartika Sari Dewi or reduce her caning sentence whether she appeal it or not under the state’s syariah laws.
