Field a Malay and win Hulu S’gor, Ku Li tells PKR

Former Umno vice-president Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah foresees a PKR-Pakatan Rakyat win in Hulu Selangor if the coalition fields a Malay candidate.

He said Pakatan had the capacity to draw Malay votes away from Barisan Nasional if it nominates a Malay candidate  who is capable and charismatic.

According to him, BN’s journey towards the Hulu Selangor by-election will be  “a long and difficult road.”

“The Hulu Selangor by-election will not be an easy road for BN. PKR is capable of attracting the Malay votes with a Malay candidate.

“BN will get secure absolute Malay support, “he said.

The Hulu Selangor by-election is scheduled for April 25. Nomination of candidates is set for April 17. The parliamentary constituency has 64,500 registered voters including 799 postal votes.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of PKR MP Zainal Abidin Ahmad on March 25.

Following his the death, MIC announced that it would forward its deputy president G Palanivel’s name to BN for the final decision. Hulu Selangor has traditionally been an MIC seat. In the March 2008 general election Palanivel lost the seat to Zainal by 198 seats.

However Hulu Selangor Umno has demanded that tradition be set aside. They have submitted a memorandum to the BN chairman Najib Tun Razak urging that the seat be returned to Umno.

Hulu Selangor Umno has thrown its support for former Selangor Menteri Besar Muhammad Muhd Taib. Even before nominations, posters of Muhammad as a potential candidate are already being hawked by his supporters.
