The Kelantan PAS government will not hamper the federal government’s distribution of ‘wang ihsan’ (compassionate payment) to the people of the state, said Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

However, Nik Aziz said, the state government regarded receiving the payment, in whatever form, as the right of the Kelantan people.

Nik Aziz was asked to comment on the statement by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin that 10,000 poor students in Kelantan will receive financial aid through the RM20 million ‘wang ihsan’.

“Although the state government will not hamper the federal government’s effort of giving the ‘wang ihsan’, what we find unacceptable is that the money is to be disbursed by Umno and not the state government,” he said.

Nik Aziz said the state government felt that the ‘wang ihsan’ payment is being politicised by Umno to fish for votes from the people under the guise of helping the poor.

He said this was unacceptable because when Umno ruled Terengganu, the federal government channelled the oil royalty to the state, but when PAS took over in 1999, it was converted to ‘wang ihsan’.

The PAS spiritual leader said the federal government’s decision not to channel the money to the state government made it appear as though the state government is incapable of managing the funds. — Bernama
