Tabung Haji rubbishes claims of sponsored trips

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim has denied that Lembaga Tabung Haji had sponsored individuals and supporters of political parties for haj pilgrimage.

She said instead, Tabung Haji sponsored its general entourage (RA) members comprising board members and members of committees under the board who capitalised on their hajj entitlement.

The sponsorship covered a hajj return flight, transportation in the Holy Land, accommodation in Mecca and Medina, medicines, daily meals and stipends. Mashitah said this when responding to a question from Dr Lo’Lo’ Mohamad Ghazali (PAS-Titiwangsa) at the Dewan Rakyat here today.

In a supplementary question, Lo’Lo’ asked whether Tabung Haji would be sponsoring 100 RA members this year and whether Tabung Haji members would be informed of the expenditure as the RA members would be accorded a VVIP treatment.

“Tabung Haji sponsored only 11 RA members last year during 1430 Hijrah and they brought their spouses along, bringing the number to only 22,” said Mashitah.

She said the RA members included a minister, Tabung Haji chairman, managing director and chief executive officer, five board members and three Hajj Advisory Council members, and their wives.

“Depositors need not be told about this as the sponsorship is part of the operation cost.

“The RA members have a duty to monitor what was happening in the Holy Land and the issues that cropped up,” she said.

It is not true that Tabung Haji will be sponsoring RA members this year, she said. — Bernama
