MCA Youth, Wanita dump AGM for snap polls

Both annual general meetings (AGMs) of MCA Youth and Wanita, which were scheduled for tomorrow, have been postponed in the wake of yesterday's en bloc resignations by the party's central committee members to make way for new polls.

Youth chief Wee Ka Siong announced the postponement after chairing an emergency executive council meeting at the party headquarters this morning.

An hour later, Wanita chief Chew Mei Fun made a similar announcement after an emergency meeting of the Wanita exco., according to Bernama.

Wee said the move to put of the AGM was due to uncertainty over the fate of the national AGM that is scheduled for Sunday, following the resignation of 21 elected central committee members, yesterday.

Those who resigned had asked for fresh party polls to be held within a month. Both Wee and Chew are aligned to the faction led by vice-president Liow Tiong Lai.

Dinner to go ahead

Wee said he had met party secretary-general Wong Foon Meng yesterday but the latter was unable to confirm if Sunday's AGM would go ahead.

"Until this morning there has been no confirmation, we discussed and deliberated the issue before deciding to postpone our AGM," said Wee.

He advised delegates who have yet to arrive in the capital to change their plans while accommodation would be provided for those who have already arrived here.

Wee said the MCA anniversary dinner planned for tomorrow has not been cancelled.

Meanwhile, Wanita chief Chew said it was a majority decision to postpone the AGM.

However, the celebrations for Wanita International Day tonight would proceed as planned.
