Palanivel the BN man for Hulu Selangor?

BN will "most probably" field a candidate from MIC for the Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is the BN deputy chairman, said the coalition had its own formula to determine the candidate.

What was important was consensus among BN component parties, he added.

"Most probably it will be given to MIC taking into consideration that it is an MIC seat. But the decision is with BN chairman Najib Razak," he told reporters after opening the Juara Rakyat programme and handing over of the inaugural compassionate payment in Machang, Kelantan.

He was asked to comment on the proposal by MIC president S Samy Vellu that MIC deputy president G Palanivel be fielded to represent the BN in the by-election.

Palanivel was the four-term member of parliament for the area from 1990 until his defeat in the 12th general election in 2008.

The by-election follows the death of incumbent Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad of PKR.

Nomination day is April 17, while polling is on April 25.

All views will be considered

Muhyiddin said the BN would take into consideration the people's sentiment in determining the candidate.

He said overlapping of requests was normal in an election but in principle, the area was an MIC seat.

The important thing, he said, was the campaign strategy to win back the people's support.

He said the BN was familiar with the opposition's campaign tactics and was better prepared to face the by-election.

"We have the strategy, that's important. Each vote is important for us," he said.
